The tale of Gazi Pir, his companion Kalu and Princess Champaboti is one of Bengal's best-known folk legends, and Barobazar is named as its setting. Wandering singers once performed it as Gazir gaan with painted scroll pictures called Gazir pat, showing Gazi riding a tiger. Mounds and ponds around Barobazar are pointed out as places in the story. The legend reflects the mix of Sufi and local beliefs in rural Bengal.
Good to know
Ask elders at Barobazar about the story; performances are rare now but sometimes staged at fairs.
