Shilaidaha Kuthibari

শিলাইদহ কুঠিবাড়ি

Tagore's estate house near the Padma, where he wrote and managed his family's lands.

Shilaidaha Kuthibari

Rabindranath Tagore spent long periods in the 1890s at Shilaidaha, managing the family estate and travelling the rivers by houseboat. The three-storey kuthibari with its distinctive sloping roof is now a museum of his photographs, furniture and paintings. Many of the songs and poems later collected in Gitanjali are linked to his years here. Large gardens and a pond surround the house.

How to get there

By auto or bus from Kushtia town via Kumarkhali road (about 45 min), or by boat across the Gorai.

Good to know

Usually closed on Sundays as a Department of Archaeology site; check before going. Tagore's birth anniversary in May brings cultural events.
