Kumarkhali handloom

কুমারখালীর তাঁত

Weavers' villages producing lungis, gamchas and bedcovers on clattering wooden looms.

Kumarkhali handloom

Kumarkhali has long been a centre of handloom weaving in the Kushtia region. In weavers' homes you can watch cotton thread wound, dyed and woven into checked lungis, gamchas and bedcovers. The town also has a historic trading past on the Gorai river. Buying directly supports a craft facing competition from power looms.

Good to know

Ask in Kumarkhali bazar for weaving neighbourhoods; mornings are busiest.
