Around Ishwardi, villages are thick with litchi trees, and for a few weeks in late spring and early summer the fruit turns the trees red. Bombai is the most common variety, with Mozaffarpuri and China-3 also grown. Traders buy fruit straight from the orchards, and roadside stalls sell bunches tied with string. A fresh litchi eaten under the trees tastes nothing like one that has travelled for days.

The season is short, roughly mid-May to mid-June, so plan ahead.
