Tanguar Haor is a protected wetland of international importance, a Ramsar site made up of many beels that merge into one great sheet of water in the monsoon. Swamp trees stand half-submerged, villages sit on raised mounds, and the blue hills of Meghalaya line the horizon. In winter the water retreats and large numbers of migratory ducks arrive. Houseboat trips from Tahirpur used to be the classic way to explore it, but in August 2026 the district administration stopped all houseboats and tourist boats inside the protected boundary until further notice, to protect the wetland.
How to get there
Bus from Dhaka or Sylhet to Sunamganj town, then by road to Tahirpur. Since 2 August 2026 houseboats and tourist boats may not enter the haor's protected boundary until further notice (Sunamganj district administration).
Good to know
Before planning, check the Sunamganj district administration's latest notice: houseboats and tourist boats inside the protected area are banned until further notice (August 2026). Choose operators with life jackets for everyone, and avoid trips during storm warnings. Carry rubbish back; plastic is a major problem here. Do not swim at night or in deep water.
