Puthia Temple Complex

পুঠিয়া মন্দির কমপ্লেক্স

A village of ponds and palaces with some of the finest terracotta temples in Bangladesh.

Puthia was the seat of a wealthy zamindar family, and the temples they built from the 18th and 19th centuries still stand around a set of large ponds. The tall Shiva Temple rises in tiers beside Shiv Sagar, while the smaller Govinda and Jagannath temples are covered in fine terracotta panels showing gods, battles and village life. The family palace, the Puthia Rajbari, faces an open field nearby. It is easy to walk between all the main buildings in a morning.

How to get there

Puthia is about 30 km east of Rajshahi city on the Rajshahi–Natore highway; buses drop you at Puthia bus stand, a short rickshaw ride from the temples.

Good to know

Go in the morning for soft light on the terracotta. Some temples are active places of worship, so remove shoes where asked.
