Lawachara is a protected semi-evergreen forest near Srimangal, best known for its endangered western hoolock gibbons, whose loud whooping calls carry across the trees in the morning. Marked trails of different lengths lead through towering trees and bamboo, and you may also see langurs, macaques and many birds. A railway line runs through the forest, a scene made famous in the film 'Around the World in 80 Days'. A Khasi village lies within the park.
