Bhawal National Park protects a remnant of the sal forest that once covered much of this part of central Bangladesh. Tall, straight sal trees shade dirt paths, small lakes and picnic areas with named cottages. Weekends and winter holidays bring crowds of picnickers, but on weekday mornings it is quiet enough to hear woodpeckers and spot monkeys. The forest is at its greenest after the first monsoon rains.
How to get there
Bus along the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway to the park gate near Rajendrapur, about 1–1.5 hours from Dhaka.
Good to know
Visit on a weekday morning; avoid winter weekends when picnic groups bring loudspeakers.
